‘Huawei Mate X3’ First Impression Review: Everything You Need To Know Before Buying

Huawei unveiled its latest foldable, the Mate X3, on March 23, 2023, in an event in China, along with its P60 series, which consists of the P60, P60 Pro, and P60 Art. The Huawei Mate X3 specs are just mind-boggling, and they have the capability to take on foldables like the Samsung Z Fold 4, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, the Oppo Find N2, and the Vivo X Fold+. Amidst all the good, there are some problems, which we will discuss in the latter part of the article, but for now, enjoy the technological enhancements brought to you by Huawei in their Mate X3.

Build And Design

Crafted with an aluminum frame and a Feather-Sand glass rear, the Huawei Mate X3 weighs only 239 g. There is also a vegan leather rear option that weighs a bit more at 241 g. The glass rear has an anti-fingerprint coating, while the leather one is skin-friendly, and both of them provide soothing aesthetics. The cover display is made of Kunlun glass, which has received 5-star drop resistance certification from SGS, Switzerland. The Huawei Mate X3 comes in an ultra-thin design with 5.3 mm of thickness and is the first non-Samsung foldable to receive an IPX8 certification. The Huawei Mate X3 features an industry-leading double-rotation water drop hinge that allows the device to open at multiple angles for selfies or video calls. But like other brands, it has not mentioned how many estimated fold cycles the hinge will survive.

Interesting Fact
The Huawei Mate X3 has become the first quad-curve foldable in the world, with a future-proof design where the four edges are slightly rounded for better handling and comfort.

Display

Both the foldable and the cover displays of the Huawei Mate X3 are equipped with an OLED display and support an adaptive refresh rate of 120 Hz. When unfolded in a book style, the display is 7.85 in, while the cover display measures 6.4 in. Both displays have a pixel density of 426 PPI and 1440 Hz PWM dimming for low-light eye protection. The resolution of the 7.85 in is 2496 x 2224 p with a touch sampling rate of 240 Hz, while that of the 6.4 in is 2504 x 1080 p with a touch sampling rate of 300 Hz. For Precise Color Projection and Color Accuracy, Huawei has gathered two TUV Rheinland certifications, and along with that, the Huawei X-True technology combines to provide immersive picture quality with lifelike details and supports 1.07 billion colors. Consistent content viewing is not a problem with the Intelligent Light Sensitive Display and the anti-reflection layer with 1000 nits of brightness also makes the screen visible in direct sunlight. The company provides the option to view things in Horizontal, Vertical, or Customized Split Screen options.

Technical

The Huawei Mate X3 runs on HarmonyOS 3.1 and is equipped with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 4G processor. As the company has been sanctioned a ban by the USA, it is unable to ship its products with Android, which is a drawback. The Huawei Mate X3 has an octa-core CPU and an Adreno 730 GPU. The Huawei Mate X3 comes with an external storage option of up to 256 GB and has internal storage options of 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB. The headphone jack is absent in the Huawei Mate X3, but it does have stereo speakers. The device is equipped with a new cross-hinge cooling system that allows the heat to dissipate evenly and even has a 20% larger heat dissipation area. A further 1800 W/m-K graphene layer with ultra-high thermal conductivity is placed to keep the phone from getting warm during severe usage.

Camera

A triple-camera module is equipped within the Huawei Mate X3, which includes 50 MP (wide), 8 MP (periscope telephoto), and 13 MP (ultrawide). OIS support for both the wide and periscope telephoto lenses comes in handy, along with 5X optical zoom and 50X digital zoom for the telephoto. With its RYYB sensor, the Huawei Mate X3 is able to capture 40% more light in images in dim lighting conditions. Vibrant colors and intricate details are very well captured due to the combination of the XDS Fusion Pro True Chrome Image Engine and Ultra Vision XMAGE system. The device is equipped with an 8 MP selfie camera on the inner and outer screens, which is able to capture 4K videos at 30 FPS.

Battery And Connectivity

The Huawei Mate X3 comes with a 4800 mAh battery, which can be charged via a 66 W fast charger. The device also supports 50 W wireless and 7.5 W reverse wireless charging. The Huawei Mate X3 is equipped with a Low-Battery Emergency Mode, which kicks in when the device is at 1% charge and provides enough power for calling for extra 12 minutes or three hours of standby. Along with WiFi 6, NFC, and Bluetooth 5.2, the Huawei Mate X3 also comes with two-way satellite communication in the connectivity department.

Conclusion

The base variant of the Huawei Mate X3 with 256 GB/ 12 GB costs CNY 12,999, which is roughly $1,889/ ₹1,56,550, and is available in Feather Sand Black, Feather Sand White, Qingshendai (Green), and Feather Sand Purple colors. The question of the availability of the device in the global market and the absence of 5G are the two roadblocks that are going to hurt the company and hold back the Huawei Mate X3 from becoming a real competitor in the foldable market if the situation remains the same. Though there is a possibility that along with the P60 Pro, FreeBuds 5, and Huawei Watch Ultimate, the Mate X3 may see a launch in Europe in May 2023.
