What Happened to the Real-Life Murdaughs? Where Are They Now?

The brutal killings of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh at the hands of family patriarch Alex shook the nation back in 2023 and since then, it has been the subject of numerous documentaries, podcasts, series, and even a Lifetime movie. Hulu’s recently concluded miniseries, โ€œMurdaugh: Death in the Family,โ€ sheds light on the true extent of corruption and power abuse of the South Carolina-based law dynasty by dramatizing a series of events that brought members of the Murdaugh family into the media’s attention for the first time. Despite adding its own fictional elements to add to the dramatic flair, the series remains more or less faithful to the real-life events. Needless to say, viewers remain curious about the fate of surviving members of the real-life Murdaugh family, which I will try to highlight in this article.

Where is Alex Murdaugh now?

Long before he was convicted as the murderer of his wife, Maggie, and younger son, Paul, Alex Murdaugh was a remorseless, manipulative criminal For nearly two decades, he swindled money from his law firm partners, clients, and family to fund his extravagant lifestyle and drug addiction. By convincing his clients to put insurance payouts and settlement money in his own dubious financial schemes, Alex continued to steal until his crimes became severe enough to have him served a federal case. The formerly renowned lawyer also came into the crosshairs of the authorities for trying to influence witness opinions during the boat crash investigation where Paul was a prime suspect. Also, the ongoing trial of Paul mounted financial pressure on Alex. It is assumed that the fear of getting exposed had pushed the entitled patriarch into committing such horrid acts, but with a seasoned criminal like Alex, there is no telling whether any excuse was needed for him to let his inner demons out. One thing the narrative depicts accurately is the fact that during his trial and even after that, Alex maintained his stance of being innocent, and so deep in denial he was, never for once he admitted to being responsible for murdering his family members. After a three-month-long trial in 2023, the jurors found Alex guilty, and he was served with two consecutive life sentences. His financial crimes, which include nearly two dozen separate cases, also caught up to him and got himforty more years of imprisonment in addition to the life sentences he is serving since 2024. Alex was also ordered to pay compensation worth several millions to his clients, including the family of his housemaid, Gloria Satterfield, whom they conned with an insurance payout scheme. At present, Alex is being held captive in a supermax prison in South Carolina, and an appeal for retrial has been filed by Alexโ€™s legal team, which is pending as of now.

Where is Buster Murdaugh now?

The golden boy of the Murdaugh family, Buster, got his name involved in a criminal case as well, as for quite a while he was suspected as a culprit in the murder of nineteen-year-old gay nursing student Stephen Smith in 2015. Even though the case was wrongly ruled out as a hit-and-run case back then, SLED reopened the case in 2021, and following an autopsy in 2023, the authorities mentioned Stephenโ€™s death as a homicide. A number of Stephenโ€™s close ones had mentioned Buster Murdaughโ€™s name, linking him to the case by mentioning him as Stephen’s secret lover and keeping his relationship secret as a possible motivation for committing murder. It was suspected that the case was initially covered up to keep the involvement of the Murdaughs a secret, but no connections were found. The case is still open and under investigation.

Buster also unwittingly got himself involved in Mallory Beachโ€™s death investigation following Paulโ€™s boat crash, as Paul had used his elder brotherโ€™s ID to purchase drinks on the fateful night. He flunked out of USC law school, and it was revealed later that Alex had used his influence and bribed the administration to have Buster readmitted. Later in 2021, Alex, burdened with a federal case for financial embezzlement, also tried to orchestrate his own murder so that Buster would receive an insurance payoutโ€”a twisted way of securing his sonโ€™s future. Unlike the series, Buster never really believed his father to be the culprit responsible for his mother and brotherโ€™s death, even though he admitted knowing about his drug addiction and financial crimes. He supports Alexโ€™s legal teamโ€™s appeal for retrial and in recent years has chosen to live a life of anonymity. Having experienced his fair share of hatred from the residents of their hometown, Hampton, thanks to his father’s notoriety, Buster moved from his old family house. At present in 2025, Buster is married to his longtime girlfriend, Brooklyn White, an attorney who graduated from USC Law School. Buster hasnโ€™t resumed his law school course to date and maintains contact with his imprisoned father.

Where is Randy Murdaugh now?

Randolph Murdaugh IIIโ€™s elder son, Randy Murdaugh, was portrayed as an honorable, dependable man and a credible lawyer who was entrusted with the charges of their family law firm. While Randy sympathized with his brotherโ€™s addiction issues, he was vocal about his strong criticisms against Alex for swindling money from their clients and partners. Randy renamed their family law firm after Alexโ€™s crimes started ruining its reputation. Like Buster, Randy believes Alex to be innocent; he has previously mentioned Alex knowing more than his statements in the trial indicate. However, unlike Buster or John Marvin, Randy didnโ€™t testify in the court either for or against his brother during the trial. Interestingly enough, Stephen Smithโ€™s murder investigation has Randyโ€™s name involved as well, as he had approached the family with the offer to handle the case for them.

At present, Randy still practices in his family law firm and lives a quiet life with his family: his wife, Christy, and two daughters. He has successfully handled numerous personal injury and product liability cases through decades and upheld the family legacy. It is not known whether he remains in touch with his imprisoned brother.ย
