The whole craziness comes to a climax when Sean invites Owen for an intimate dinner.
Tara Road (2005)
Adapted from the Maeve Binchy novel of the same name, “Tara Road” follows Marily (Andie MacDowell), who lives in suburban Connecticut. Marilyn and her husband Greg are mourning the recent loss of her son while Ria (Olivia Williams) in Dublin learns about her husband’s extramarital affair. They both decide to switch houses and countries to get away from their crisis. Both managed to find comfort and tranquillity in their new surroundings. They also got close to their new neighbors. Ria gets a cooking job while Marilyn finds a friend in the restaurant owner, Colm Maguire (Stephen Rea). The movie is praised for its strong script and its twists and turns, which makes it a captivating watch.
Switch (2011)
“Switch” is a French movie directed by Frederic Schoendoerffer and is about Sophie (Karine Vanasse), a graphic designer in Canada who uses a website called switch.com to switch her house in Toronto for an apartment in Paris for a while. She flies to Paris and enjoys her stay there until things go awry when the police find a corpse inside a locked room in her apartment. She gets arrested and mistaken for the owner of the apartment. The film has a fast-moving plot filled with intense action sequences that are also shot well and has a European flashiness to its cinematography which some may find desirable.
No Strings Attached (2011)
Adam (Ashton Kutcher) is eyeing a casual relationship (after his recent breakup) when he meets Emma (Natalie Portman), someone he’s known since childhood. Things get steamy as they have sex right away before agreeing to a friends-with-benefits kind of relationship. Things don’t go according to plan, as Adam soon develops feelings for Emma. Directed by Ivan Reitman, known for his impressive work in “Ghostbuster (1984)” along with some great comedies such as “Stripes (1981)” and “Kindergarten Cop (1990),” “No Strings Attached” was certainly not his strongest movie, but good performances especially from Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher gave the movie a well-needed charm. The supporting cast is top-notch here and boasts the talents of Greta Gerwig, Mindy Kaling, and Ludacris, among others, which helped to elevate the comedic element of the film. In the end, “No Strings Attached” is a watchable rom-com flick with charming performances and a by-the-numbers plot that doesn’t achieve anything new.
Set It Up (2018)
Directed by Claire Scanlon, who is known for her work in the hit sitcom “The Office,” “Set it Up” chronicles the tale of Harper (Zoey Deutch) and Charlie (Glen Powell), two corporate employees who plan to distract their overburdening bosses by setting them up with each other, thereby hoping to get some much-needed respite from their stressful jobs. They soon realize that their plan isn’t foolproof as things begin spiraling out of control. “Set it Up” has a “done-before” plot, but the movie explores it further and does something unique and fresh with it. Another great thing about the movie is its characters. The main leads, as well as the supporting characters, are all well-rounded, and the performances of both Deutch and Powell are thoroughly entertaining. “Set it Up” is a feel-good movie that doesn’t feel like a rip-off, featuring some great performances along with a plot that has some surprising twists along the way.
Friends With Benefits (2011)
Directed by Will Gluck, previously known for “Easy A (2010),” “Friends with Benefits” is a rom-com starring Mila Kunis as Jamie, an executive headhunter who helps Dylan (Justin Timberlake) land a job at GQ magazine in New York. Funnily enough, both Dylan and Jamie had recently broken up from their relationships, and they soon became friends before striking up a deal to have sex without any emotional attachments. Things go smoothly for a while, but as usual, they develop feelings for one another. Even though the plot here isn’t entirely original, there is a certain quirkiness to the screenplay, coupled with some brilliant chemistry between Kunis and Timberlake, that makes this movie so fun to watch. Another thing the film does well is the way it manages humor with the emotional parts of the film. It strikes a balance between being too melodramatic and just being a slapstick comedy. Mila Kunis is the main star here, as her vibrant and charming charisma is difficult to ignore, and she’s incredibly funny too.
