Imagine a scenario where you carry a device that can serve as both a smartwatch and an earphone. Sounds too good to be true, right? On December 9, 2022, Huawei launched a product called “Huawei Watch Buds,” which is a 2-in-1 device, and the design is the first of its kind. With a regular smartwatch, the screen opens up to house a pair of earbuds inside the watch. In 2022, only Nokia created the Nokia 5710 XA model, which is a phone with in-built earbuds. But creating a watch with such a mechanism is something of an engineering wonder. First, check out the box’s contents and then read the specifications to get a better idea of the product.
Contents Of The Box
Huawei Watch Buds come in a premium standard box with the following basic contents:
- An innovatively designed watch
- Earbuds inside the watch
- Two extra pairs of earplugs
- A charging base
- Quick guides, a warranty card, and a music rights card
Huawei Watch Buds Specifications
For such an out-of-the-box design, the specifications of the device are not at all bad.
Body Design: The slim chassis of the Huawei Watch Buds are made of stainless steel and come with standard 22 mm leather straps and a glass front. The smartwatch has a dimension of 47 x 47.5 x 15 mm and weighs 66.5 g. If you look closely, you will understand that the watch design is similar to the GT series by Huawei and the screen-to-body ratio of the device is 29.53%. At this moment, the leather straps come in two colors, black and brown, and are made of first-layer calfskin. The smooth hinge structure in the steel frame opens up to house two magnetic earbuds. The earbuds have a symmetrical octagonal cylinder design and weigh only 4 g each.
Display: The Huawei Watch Buds has a subtly curved 1.4-inch AMOLED display and also comes with a digital crown. The screen on the watch supports slides and touch gestures and works smoothly. The digital crown can be used for various functions like scrolling, setting time and date, and many more. Huawei Watch Buds come with a resolution of 466 x 466 pixels and have a pixel density of around 326 PPI. The 2-in-1 device is IP54-rated, which means it is both water and dust-resistant up to some extent.
Performance And Connectivity: Powered by the Harmony OS, the Huawei Watch Buds comes with 5.2 Bluetooth connectivity and NFC support. Unfortunately, the device lacks feature like cellular connectivity, a memory card slot, USB, GPRS, and WLAN. The smartwatch seamlessly pairs with both Android and iOS using the Huawei Health app and also supports third-party app downloads. More than 80 indoor and outdoor sports modes are found in this device, along with health tracking options like a sleep monitor, calorie tracker, steps calculator, blood oxygen detection, and a heart rate monitor. The device also has more than 200 professional fitness courses and supports features like an accelerometer, gyro sensor, ambient light sensor, bone conduction, and a capacitive sensor. Huawei Watch Buds also have an ECG and can detect atrial fibrillation.
Now coming to the earbuds, they are small and beautifully crafted, and they fit inside the watch body with 90% internal space utilization. Though small, the earbuds come with excellent sound synchronization and are full of power. The earbuds have active noise cancellation, triple real-time hearing optimization, and a transparent mode. The earbuds also have AI noise reduction for distraction-free music and better voice calls. The smart control center of the watch can be used for pairing the earbuds with other devices and to easily control the noise reduction mode. The sound is decent, but when compared to rod-type earbuds, there is a 50% volume reduction.
Battery: The smartwatch has a 410 mAh non-removable battery, while the earbuds have a 30 mAh non-removable battery. Huawei claims that the device can run for three days on a single charge, and when the power-saving mode is on, it can go up to 7 days. The device supports superfast wireless charging, and with the ANC turned off; the Huawei Watch Buds can provide 4 hours of uninterrupted music and 2.5 hours of talk time. On the other hand, keeping the ANC on would provide 3 hours of music and 2 hours of talk time.
Price: Huawei has yet to confirm the product’s global availability and price, but it was made available in China on December 9, 2022, for 2988 yuan (407 euros and 429 dollars).
Wrapping Up
The concept of an earbud with a smartwatch is not a new one. Many other companies have tried this combination and mostly put the buds on the sides of the watch, making it bulky. Huawei has rethought the concept and made a sleek design that has perfectly amalgamated with the name “Watch Buds.”
