Warner Bros. Rejected Rachel Zegler For A Major Superhero Role And Gave Her ‘Shazam 2’ Instead

“Shazam! The Fury of the Gods” will be Rachel Zegler’s first foray into the superhero movie genre. In the movie, she plays one of the three daughters of Atlas, named Anthea, alongside Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu. While bagging the role of a goddess in the sequel to a film whose first installment raked in more than $350 million worldwide is no small feat, there could have been a bigger opportunity for Zegler. After all, the actress also auditioned for the role of Supergirl in “The Flash.”

Rachel Zegler Auditioned For The Role Of ‘Supergirl’

It’s always interesting to learn about actors who almost landed a role. It creates a what-if scenario that’s fascinating for fans to explore. In another such instance, Rachel Zegler has admitted to auditioning for the role of another DC hero, Supergirl. In an interview with SlashFilm, the “Shazam 2” star admitted that she auditioned for multiple characters at one point of time. She especially mentioned her first big film, the Steven Spielberg-directed “West Side Story,” and added that she auditioned for about a year to get it.

However, the actress wasn’t pleased with auditioning nine times and termed the process “borderline abuse.” However, her experience with screen testing for DC was very positive and, in fact, took her by surprise as she booked the character of Anthea in “Shazam 2” within one and a half months. But the actress confessed that she was initially brought in by the casting director, Rich Delia, to test for the role of Supergirl in “The Flash.” However, the emerging star admitted that she wasn’t the right person for the role. Later on, she was offered the role in “Shazam 2.”

Zegler did a readthrough for Anthea on Zoom with David Sandberg (the director of “Shazam 2”) and then did a chemistry read with Jack Dylan Grazer, who plays Freddie Freeman in the movie. After all, their characters are supposed to be romantically involved. The actress revealed that it was Grazer who ultimately chose her because of her role as Maria in “West Side Story,” since he’s a fan of the movie.

Her story about auditioning for the role of Supergirl and bagging the role of another DC character in a different production is eyebrow-raising. But she isn’t the only actress who experienced this. In September 2022, Bruna Marquezine revealed that she had auditioned for the role of Supergirl as well. But she didn’t get the part since she couldn’t fly to England during the raging pandemic for the final casting process. However, she did bag the role of the female lead in the upcoming DC film “Blue Beetle.”

In the end, Sasha Calle was the one who bagged the seemingly coveted role of Supergirl in “The Flash.” The Ezra Miller-led film has been leading social media conversation ever since the first trailer of the movie dropped. Fans are also eagerly waiting to see the last daughter of Krypton on the big screen after an absence of about 40 years. “The Flash” will mark Sasha Calle’s first theatrical venture, and it might just as well kickstart her Hollywood career since the movie is poised to shatter box office records. It’s rumored that Warner Bros. Discovery is so confident about the film that they will screen it in full at 2023 CinemaCon.

Will Sasha Calle Stay On As DCU’s ‘Supergirl’?

DC fans are conflicted about Sasha Calle’s future in the DCU. Some are waiting to see her performance in “The Flash” film before deciding if the character of Supergirl needs to be recast or not. Others are of the view that since everyone except Viola Davis and John Cena is getting recast, she should be as well. Regardless, almost everyone thinks that the actress should color her hair blonde for the solo DC Universe film “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” if she stays.

James Gunn was asked about Calle’s future at DC, and the co-CEO of DC Studios commented that he hadn’t decided yet. Many fans inferred that Gunn is probably waiting to see the performance of “The Flash” film as well as the public’s reception towards her version of the Kryptonian hero. If she gets overwhelming praise, Calle might just get to keep the coveted role. However, there are also interesting rumors from film insiders. Many scoops have stated that one actor from “The Flash” film will successfully make the jump to the new DC Universe.

While this could hint at Ezra Miller, the star of the film, staying on as Barry Allen/The Flash, considering his troubled past and the allegations against him, many think that Calle will be the one to sail through and keep her role. After all, the two batmen in the film, Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton, are unlikely to return. This mystery will probably be revealed after “The Flash” premieres on June 16, 2023. Also, “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” will be released on March 17, 2023.
