“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” gave fans a look at the other universes in the multiverse. Although “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Loki” showed MCU fans what variants mean and even depicted team-ups between them, it was Doctor Strange 2 that fleshed out the other worlds. Most noticeably, we saw Earth-838 and the Illuminati team there.
Consisting of Captain Carter, Captain Marvel, Black Bolt, Mr. Fantastic, and Professor X, this was the Earth’s protection squad. But that’s not all. As we saw in the movie, there was another team member. It was Supreme Strange. But we didn’t really get to see him apart from a statue and a few seconds of actual screen time.
Earth-838’s Supreme Strange was killed off by Black Bolt because he became the first Variant to use the Darkhold. So Black Bolt had to eliminate him to ensure the safety of the multiverse. As such, we didn’t even get to see what his actual suit, in all of its glory, would have looked like. But thanks to Marvel Studios, now we do.
Marvel Studios Showcases Supreme Strange’s Look
Ian Joyner, the Visual Development Supervisor (VDS) at Marvel Studios, posted the very first concept art created for the Supreme Strange variant of Doctor Strange from “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Sharing his post on Instagram, Joyner said this was the final concept art of “Supreme Strange” that was approved by Marvel Studios for the film. The VDS further said that he tried to convey the history and attitude of each Doctor Strange variant with his costumes. He also praised Keith Christensen, a concept artist who developed Mordo’s look using armor relics, which in turn inspired him to create the Supreme Strange look similarly so that they looked like they belonged to the same Earth. Joyner also expressed regret at not seeing the Supreme Strange outfit in the film, apart from the memorial statue made by Designer Charlie Wood and his team. At the end of the caption, he also thanked Graham Churchyard, the costume designer, who brought his art to life for the few seconds we saw it on screen.
The concept art is the same as the suit we saw in the movie, except that we get a good look at the little details. Note that the costume’s robes have a bold blue midnight color, and his Cloak of Levitation is now completely white instead of the red we know of. Also, the cloak’s collar is way higher than the one sported by our Strange. Another notable difference lies in the clean-shaven look of Supreme Strange. We know that Prime Strange sports a goatee/mustache combo, and Sinister Strange has an unruly beard. The costume for Supreme Strange was unique from the ones other Strange variants wore, and that made it stand out among all of them.
Will We See Supreme Strange Again?
Even though Supreme Strange didn’t get much screen time, he played a major role in the film. After all, he was the one who motivated Prime Strange to stop Wanda Maximoff from wreaking havoc on all reality. Also, he presented the dream-walking idea, and even though he died for that, our Strange took his idea and dream-walked onto Zombie Strange’s corpse to show Wanda what she did wrong.
Benedict Cumberbatch has expressed his desire to portray even more Doctor Strange variants, and it’s certainly possible. After all, “Avengers: Kang Dynasty” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” will reportedly have the heroes travel to other Earths to find superpowered people who can take a stand against Kang. So, we will probably see Cumberbatch portraying other new variants. However, Supreme Strange might not be among those variants since an alive version of Supreme Strange will probably complicate the idea of the multiverse further for the general audience. But if not in live-action, can we see Supreme Strange in animation? Maybe the second season of “What If…?” will flesh out the world of Supreme Strange further. One can hope, but we won’t keep our hopes too high. After all, it looks like Phase 5 of the MCU is moving full speed forward to set up “Avengers: Kang Dynasty” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” So, we might not get episodes that flesh out the Earths where the main hero is now dead.
If fans want to see our Prime Doctor Strange again, they won’t have to wait a lot. There’s speculation that Marvel Studios is fast-tracking “Doctor Strange 3” and also reportedly developing a “Strange Academy” show on Disney+. These two projects are reportedly getting made and released before “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Perhaps because magic will play a main role in defeating Kang? However, if you want to see Supreme Strange again, you can watch “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” now streaming on Disney+.
