‘ChatGPT’ Explained: Will ChatGPT End Google’s Relevance?

The name “ChatGPT” has created a buzz around the globe in the field of technology. Some have termed it the “Google killer” or the “next big thing,” and whether you are a technology enthusiast or not, you better pay attention to what ChatGPT has to offer. From writing down essays to codes, ChatGPT can provide human-like responses and information in a matter of minutes and is a revolutionary breakthrough in the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Does this mean the creators have been able to create one of the most desired “Theory of Mind AI” technologies? Continue reading the blog to get a full understanding of what ChatGPT is and where its future lies.

What Is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an advanced chatbot that uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) to understand and actively participate in discussions, generating meaningful answers in a human-like manner. The interesting part is that this chatbot is like a tabula rasa and is trained to pick up patterns from the vast amount of textual data that has been fed to it from the internet and, with further human assistance, can answer the questions of the user. ChatGPT is rightfully gaining massive popularity as it has surpassed the limitations of what AI has achieved so far.

Origin Of ChatGPT

ChatGPT is the creation of OpenAI, the similar company that was responsible for creating GPT-3, which could create human-like text, and DALL-E, which is capable of initiating “generative art.” The company OpenAI was founded by Sam Altman, Reid Hoffman, Elon Musk, and many others in San Francisco in 2015. Though Musk resigned in 2018, he remained a donor, and the company also received a $1 billion investment from Microsoft. The architecture of ChatGPT is modeled upon GPT-3 and GPT-3.5, of which GPT-3 was launched by OpenAI in 2020.

How Does ChatGPT Work?

As ChatGPT is modeled on GPT-3 and GPT-3.5’s technology, understanding GPT is of prime importance. In AI technology, GPT (Generative Pre-Training Transformer) can be categorized as a large language model that has the ability to engage with users in conversations naturally. The responses seem extremely organized and resemble a human touch.

Now you can understand reaching this stage was not a matter of joke. Taking various text databases from the internet, the GPT model was coached to answer vigorously. To be exact, 570 GB of data and 300 billion words were fed into the system to make it workable. The technology heavily depends on probability as it is a language model and tries to predict the next word in a sentence.

To reach this probability stage, the technology went through a series of supervised tests. The system was fed with input, where there were two possibilities. It can predict either the right or the wrong answer. If the answer it predicted was wrong, the members supervising the test fed the system with the right answer and helped it build a knowledge base. The system was then taught to provide multiple answers, ranking them from worst to best, and was also trained in comparisons. What is truly remarkable about this technology is its hunger for continuous learning while guessing the correct answers.

What Can ChatGPT Do?

ChatGPT is able to perform a range of text-based tasks and provides pretty neat answers. Some of the cool features that can come in handy for users are:

Solving Assignments: Whether you are in school, at university, or pursuing a Ph.D., you can solve your assignments with ChatGPT without any hassle. Say for example you had been provided with an essay topic that requires rigorous research. You had completely forgotten about the assignment, and your submission is due tomorrow. Well, just put the topic in the question bar of ChatGPT, and it will write a breathtaking essay for you.

Write And Debug Code: If you are new to programming or want to learn to code, ChatGPT can help you do so. Just provide it with the prompt for which you want the code, and it will write it for you. The coolest part is that it can even write the code in the language you desire. Programmers will massively benefit from the debugging feature. Suppose you have written a code that is showing errors continuously. ChatGPT will not only help you fix the code but also explain the vulnerabilities and suggest other potential fixing options.

Explain And Tutor: The explaining and tutoring power of ChatGPT is truly enhanced and refined, and it can basically change the way learners perceive things. For example, suppose you want to learn about a particular topic in quantum mechanics. ChatGPT will provide you with remarkable explanations of the whole topic. To make things simple, you can ask it to “explain like I am 10 years old,” and it will obey your command. You can even command it to tell you the answer in a particular style, like that of a cowboy from old western movies.

Data Manipulation: The way ChatGPT can help users manipulate data is extremely noteworthy. Provide the chatbot with the text and mention the type of data you want to extract from it. The chatbot can even add indexes, understand JSON, and generate data in tables, among many other things.

What Are The Limitations Of ChatGPT?

Though the potential of ChatGPT is endless, the chatbot still has some limitations. Some of them are:

Inaccuracy And Biasness: Some answers provided by ChatGPT are hilariously wrong and extremely biased. The harmful part is that it provides an inaccurate answer in a confident manner, and if you do not have an idea about that topic, things could be messy. The website StackOverflow has even banned ChatGPT answers to its questions for their low accuracy. When it comes to minority groups, the answer shown is biased, and this issue has been faced by all the other AI tools.

Sustainability And Capability: Launched in November 2022, the meta version of the chatbot is free to use, but it has gone down temporarily for many users around the globe several times. A Twitter thread even suggested that running ChatGPT is quite expensive, just like other AI tools. These limitations raise the question of how viable it would be to use ChatGPT commercially.

Unknown Current Events And Plagiarism: As the chatbot lacks daily updates on the data feed, it is not possible for ChatGPT to provide informative content on all events occurring in 2022. As ChatGPT was coached from the available data on the internet, Google’s algorithm is bound to pick up the pattern of the chatbot’s writing and flag it as plagiarism in many cases.

Will ChatGPT Replace Google?

Some of the solutions provided by ChatGPT have blown away the audience and even, in many cases, surpassed what Google has to offer for the same. But like Google, it does not have access to the internet and solely depends on trained data, which has its own limitations. Google provides you with a suggestive answer with citations and links to websites for further relevance, whereas ChatGPT provides raw text with no links or citations. Yes, there is no doubt that it is the future of technology, but it cannot replace Google at this very moment, even though it is a rival.
