The long-awaited trailer for the new Flash movie has been released recently, and fans are clearly excited for DC’s next big film. The movie features the return of Michael Keaton as Batman, 34 years after he last wore the cape. “The Flash” also glimpses the return of Ben Affleck as his version of Batman, along with Ezra Miller as Flash, Sasha Calle as Supergirl, and Michael Shannon as Zod, among others. The movie follows Ezra Miller’s Flash as he uses his powers to travel back in time to prevent his mother’s murder. Things go out of control as his actions cause severe unintended consequences. X-Men: Days Of Future Past (2014)
Like “The Flash,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past ” has a character travelling to the past to change the present. When highly specialized robots known as Sentinels are created to detect and annihilate all mutants, the last standing group, composed of Xavier’s bunch and the followers of Magneto, bands together to send Logan to the past to prevent the creation of these robots in the first place. Logan faces the difficult task of bringing together the past versions of Xavier and Magneto (then not in speaking terms) together to try and stop Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) from murdering scientist Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage). An act that results in the creation of the sentinels. “X-Men: Days of Future Past” is one of the best movies of the X-Men franchise and brings together the casts from the original trilogy and the current saga to make a film of epic proportions. The complex plot could have easily derailed the movie, but the brilliant execution by Direction Bryan Singer ensured a flawless movie with loads of fan favourite moments. The film is a treat for an X-Men fan but is also thoroughly enjoyable for a casual audience too.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021)
Released in 2021 after many years of requests and campaigning by the fans, the director’s cut of “Justice League (2017)” was well received by the fans, even though the movie had a gargantuan runtime of more than 4 hours. The new edition had a bunch of story arcs and character development that made it vastly superior to the original. The movie was also filmed better than the original, and the new aspect ratio of 4:3 made for a unique-looking movie. With the film, Snyder was able to achieve his vision without any studio interference, and his vision, although not without flaws, is still a respectable film with a coherent story, slick action sequences, and an overall darker and grim aesthetic.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
After the devastating finale of “Avengers: Infinity War,” the remaining heroes band together to try and undo Thanos’s mass annihilation. “Avengers: Endgame,” like “The Flash,” also features time travel shenanigans. The movie is more than 3 hours long and serves as the epic conclusion to the Infinity Saga. “Avengers: Endgame” features almost all of the characters from the MCU, and the final battle is just pure action overload with all the good guys we’ve come to love in the last ten years pitted against Thanos and his army. The movie also does a great job of concluding the stories of several well-loved characters, such as Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow, while also giving a satisfying conclusion to one of the best cinematic sagas ever, comprising of 22 films and spanning more than a decade.
Deadpool 2 (2018)
After the massive success of the first “Deadpool (2016),” there was no doubt that the studio would soon pump out a sequel. This time around, Deadpool is tasked with saving mutant teenager Firefist (Julian Dennison) from time-travelling badass Cable (Josh Brolin), who is on a path of vengeance for his family, whom he claims to have been murdered by an adult Firefist in the future. Like the first movie, “Deadpool 2” is also filled to the brim with gags, most of which contain some explicit content, along with a good amount of dark humour. Ryan Reynolds was magnetic as the foul-mouthed mercenary, and he met his match here with the cold and calculated killer Cable. Josh Brolin was cold and menacing as the time-travelling mercenary, and the contrast of his character with Deadpool made for some genuinely comic scenes.
The Terminator (1984)
A cyborg assassin is sent from the future to find and kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), whose future son is the key to saving humanity from being annihilated by artificial intelligence in the future. Schwarzenegger is the perfect casting for the killer robot “Terminator,” as he delivers a stunningly robotic performance boosted by his immense charisma and his godly physique. Directed by James Cameron, the movie went on to become a massive hit and is rightly considered a classic and one of the best action films of all time. What made “The Terminator” miles ahead of its time was its innovative plot mixed with some bombastic action sequences that still hold up even today. The action sequences are frequent, stylish, and breathtaking. The minimal use of CGI is a smart decision as the action has aged extremely well, unlike other action and sci-fi movies of the era.
Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013)
“Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox” is the first entry in the DC Animated Movie Universe and follows Barry Allen, a.k.a. Flash, who finds himself in a war-torn alternate timeline where the Justice League is non-existent and now has to form an alternate version of the Justice League to save the world from the war between Aquaman’s Atlantis and Wonder Woman’s Amazons. Flash is voiced by Justin Chambers, Michael B. Jordan as Cyborg and Kevin McKidd as Batman, among others. The movie is an adaptation of the 2011 comic book “Flashpoint,” and it largely sticks to the original plot, which is appreciated by die-hard fans of the comic book, but as a film, it had too little run time to do justice to such a big event. Regardless, a thrilling plot, along with commendable animation, make this a solid movie.
12 Monkeys (1995)
In the future, humanity is forced to go underground after a deadly virus nearly wipes out all of the mankind. James Cole (Bruce Willis), a prisoner, is tasked with time-travelling to 1996 to collect information about the virus before it was released by a rogue group known as the Army of the Twelve Monkeys. The movie was praised for its futuristic plot, intense cinematography, and an unhinged performance by Brad Pitt, along with Bruce Willis, who gave one of his most impressive performances to date. The cinematography here is hypnotic, and Director Terry Gilliam’s eye for grotesque imagery is well evident. The plot is stunningly bizarre and complex, leading to a nerve-racking finale, making “12 Monkeys” one of the best sci-fi movies ever made.
