Directed by Louis Paxton, “The Incomer” revolves around the lives of two siblings named Isla and Sandy, who have been living on this remote island, the Auk Isle, for years. The island once had human inhabitants, but they all left for the mainland, except for Isla and Sandy’s family. They are strongly opposed to the mainlanders calling them “incomers.” The island is theirs, and they are unwilling to let it go, no matter what. However, their lives take an interesting turn when they befriend an incomer, Daniel.
Why Has Daniel Come To Auk Isle?
Daniel is a worker at the North Eastern Scottish Council. He is a land recovery coordinator, and his job is to recover properties from illegal tenants for the government of his country. You may think that he is in a respectable position, which he is, for sure, but nobody actually respects him because he is different from others. People call him weird at all times, and they try to dismiss him by not taking him seriously. Daniel wants to hide away from everyone at his work, but that does not happen anymore because his employer, Roz, assigns him the job of recovering the Auk Isle from its illegal tenants. At first, Daniel refuses to go because he does not prefer doing doorstep evictions; that is actually his colleague Calum’s department. Roz does not let Calum take over the job this time because he is under an internal investigation for dislocating a pensioner’s hip. This also implies that Calum is a violent man, and he cannot go for peaceful negotiations with the tenants. Daniel is threatened by Roz that if he does not take up the job, he may end up losing his position at the company forever. Roz too has her own agenda; wants to get the work over with as soon as possible because she wants to take up a senior position. SoDaniel has no choice but to carry the work forward. Upon arriving at the Auk Isle, he meets Isla and Sandy.
How Does Daniel Trick Isla And Sandy?
The way Isla and Sandy behave with Daniel makes him realize that they have never had any visitors from the mainland before. They live in a primitive manner, dress up as birds and feed on whatever nature provides them. Since Daniel is from the mainland, he is a threat to the island, and the siblings treat him as an “incomer.” They attack him violently and try to toss him into the raging sea, but Daniel tricks them. He clicks a picture of them on his cell phone and tells them that he has captured their souls. He calls himself a wizard in front of the siblings, who, by the way, do not know what a wizard is and convinces them to leave him alone. Isla and Sandy leave Daniel alone, but soon after they develop a close friendship with each other. Isla tells Daniel and Sandy about the stories of the island, and he, on the other hand, narrates the fan fiction that he has created by himself on the mainland. Daniel’s stories about hobbits and predators fascinate Isla and Sandy, and they grow comfortable in his presence. They slowly learn that Daniel is no threat to them, and they start to involve him in their own culture of dressing up as seagulls.
Why Is Sandy Fond Of Daniel?
Sandy does not understand his romantic preferences yet because he has never been exposed to the idea of LGBTQIA+. He is fond of Daniel not only because he gives him a banana or his mesmerizing stories, but also because he is in love with him. Sandy is gay, and he does not know it yet because he has never been to the mainland in his entire thirty years of life. Once Sandy learns that his sister, Isla, likes Daniel too, he gets heartbroken. He does not want his sister to suffer because of him, and he wants them to stay happy together because he witnesses how Isla smiles when Daniel is around. Since their father gave himself to the sea, Isla has never smiled even once. She has been taking care of Sandy since then, and now, with Daniel’s appearance, she has started to be happy again. Sandy observes everything and decides to let them be happy together. This is the ultimate reason why he yeets himself into the sea in hopes of getting killed, but Isla and Daniel ultimately save him. Sandy has been Isla’s home for years, which is why she cannot let her brother die for her happiness.
Who Is A Fin Man?
A Fin Man is a strange addition to the entire movie because he is not exactly a person. He is a creepy combination of a seal and a human being. Fin Men are cunning, and they want people from the Auk Island. Back in the day, a group of fishermen went into the sea when they came across Fin Men. The Fin Men told them that it was their island, and if humans had to stay on it, they would have to give one of the islanders to them forever. All of the people were terrified of them, but there was one man who was willing to sacrifice. He was none other than Isla and Sandy’s father. Unfortunately enough, their father gave himself away to the Fin Men, who took him under the sea forever. I think the Fin Men ate him. In the current situation, one of them convinces Isla to give herself to them as well. The Fin Man tells her that it is what her father would have wanted too, but Isla realizes that nobody asks her about her wishes. She has been taking the responsibilities of the island for so long that she forgot about her own wishes and wants. Isla ultimately refuses to give herself to the Fin Man and walks away from the cliff.
What Happened To Isla’s Mum?
Isla’s mum was a mainlander. Isla misses her mum, so she has kept her mum’s old photos and belongings in her secret shed. Her mother was suffering from a disease, but her father did not allow the mother to go to the mainland for treatment. By the time Isla’s mother finally reached the mainland, it was too late, and she ultimately passed away. Isla’s father opined that if she had stayed on the island, she would have lived, which is obviously not true. Her father was a hardcore islander, and it is kind of discernible that he did not want to leave the island whatsoever. He even trained his children to survive on the island. However, Isla and Sandy cannot spend the rest of their lives on the island alone anymore.
What Happens To Daniel, Isla And Sandy In The End?
Calum contacts Roz to send the evacuation team to the island. After they arrive, they try to coerce Isla and Sandy to accept their proposal of moving to the mainland, but the siblings do not move forward without a fight. After Roz’s men overpower Isla and Sandy, Daniel rescues them from their clutches by luring the seagulls with seeds. Daniel tells Isla and Sandy to go inside the house, and he starts to converse with Roz. He states that he is not afraid to be called weird anymore and that whatever they are trying to do by force is absolutely wrong. The job of the company is to help people out and not to make their lives miserable. Isla and Sandy finally understand that they cannot live the rest of their lives on the island anymore, and hence, they decide to leave the place with Daniel. After returning to the mainland, their lives change for good. Sandy finds a man for himself with whom he gets to be happy. Isla writes her stories about Auk Isle and narrates them to a room full of an audience. Daniel is finally happy at his workplace because Roz and her team have been punished for their wrongdoings. In conclusion, all three of them are finally happy in the end, and that’s what matters the most.
